Voice Acting for Anime: Bringing Characters to Life

Voice acting for anime is one of the most thrilling—and demanding—jobs in the VO world. To truly shine in this unique art form, you’ll need a mix of solid training, a sharp ear, and a deep commitment to the craft.

In anime, every character has their own rhythm, energy, and emotion. Your job is to deliver a natural, believable performance that fits the animation’s timing, style, and culture. You might be called on to match lip flaps, express huge emotional swings, or capture the quiet vulnerability of a character in just a few takes—often with little preparation.

It takes dedication, precision, and heart to bring these stories to life. With practice and the right guidance, you’ll be ready to make anime magic happen!

  • Develop advanced performance skills for anime and creating dynamic characters in an authentic way
  • Hone and develop advanced original characters for your demo reel, agents, and competitive auditions
  • In-depth review and practice of efforts for anime fight scenes and action sequences.
  • Learn how to be your own voice director and discovering how you know you have developed a believable character for auditions.

Paulette Lifton is a multi-Emmy and MPSE winning Sound/ADR Supervisor on shows like Kung Fu Panda, SpongeBob Squarepants and the hit Netflix show Blue Eye Samurai. She was Co-Producer and Casting Director of the animated series, Spy Kids: Mission Critical for Netflix. Ms. Lifton was also the casting and voice director on multiple animated and live-action features for Netflix, Amazon and Starz including the Academy Award-nominated films Lion and Carol. She voice-directed some of the top actors in the business; Meryl Streep, Ed Norton, Jim Gaffigan, Julie Andrews, Kate McKinnon, Elle Fanning, Nat Wolff and Mel Brooks. Her dubbing casting and voice directing career spans both English and Spanish live action, animation and anime on Netflix, Paramount, HBO and Amazon Prime. Paulette has five 2026 SOVAS nominations for casting and voice directing for anime!
