First-class is a crash course on the UCB rules of improv and how to approach scene work. This course is character-focused and breaks down the ways to approach building characters and how it is used in improv.

This workshop aims to demystify improv and make it accessible to all and give you a thorough and incredibly useful foundation of knowledge, tools, and techniques to learn to find your way into improv and how to stand out in auditions, and to have full access to your creativity as a voice-over actor.

What We Will Cover:

  • Class focuses on tenants of improv scene work and the UCB based rules of improv: Yes/And, If/Then, Starting with a Base Reality, Finding the first Unusual Thing, 
  • Breaking down the three pillars of character, each class focusing on one pillar; Physicality, Character POV, Character Voice
  • Meisner-based listening and POV exercises designed to reveal deep intention behind improvised lines.
  • Weekly homework exercises to create and inspire unique characters based on improv techniques.
  • Round robin exercises featuring space work and emotion to beget character specificity.
  • Visual Prompts for creating character and improvising based on the switch up.
  • Discussions between actors that are modified with extreme physical/vocal "stereotypes".
  • Students create characters focusing on precision, accuracy, and vocabulary of character from assigned unique celebrities.
  • Understanding and implementing the character triangle improv technique. 
  • A whole bunch of fun tips and tricks to use improv in your auditions. 
  • How improv can make you stand out from the crowd of auditions!

With over 20 years of experience in acting for the stage and voice, Chris is a charismatic and versatile performer who can bring characters to life. With a Degree in Animation, Interactive Technology, Video Graphics and Special Effects, Chris understands the creative pipeline of traditional animation from invention of a character to matching a distinctive voice to an existing character. Chris is also a firm believer that life is improvisation and understanding how to create good improv can add to every aspect your personal objectives.

Paulette Lifton, is a multi-Emmy and MPSE winning Sound/ADR Supervisor on shows like Kung Fu Panda and SpongeBob Squarepants. She was Co-Producer and Casting Director of the animated series, Spy Kids: Mission Critical for Neflix. Ms. Lifton was also the casting and voice director on multiple animated and live-action features for Netflix, Amazon and Starz including the Academy Award-nominated films Lion and Carol. She voice-directed some of the top actors in the business; Meryl Streep, Ed Norton, Jim Gaffigan, Julie Andrews, Kate McKinnon, Elle Fanning, Nat Wolff and Mel Brooks.
